Nicole Thomson, MA, RCCThere are many reasons people come to counselling: Needing help through a crisis, Wanting to change, Feeling stuck in life I am available for personal counselling as well as online counselling. Personal growth. Setting aside time for reflection, So many other reasons! My mission is to create a safe space for you to feel comfortable, so you can consider and discuss anything that’s going on for you. If change is your focus, we will work together to figure out where you’re at, where you’d rather be, and how we will get you there. Despite each person being so different, here are some guiding principles I base my all of my work around: I’ve studied how people can change, but you will always know more about you. What does this mean? We will work on your goals, and you are in charge. When you don’t want to talk about something, I respect that I won’t make annoying suggestions without knowing what you’ve tried. We’ll work at your pace. This approach has a few names, some call it “client led” or “client centred. ”Why is it important? Sometimes, we go through so much, or we end up in situations that we really want to change, and so part of us wonders if we can trust our own judgment. Therapy can be an amazing process, where we discover that we have good reasons for being the way we are, and that we all have a natural drive towards self-improvement. It’s part of my job to support and nurture that instinct, but it comes from within you. Nicole is available for one-on-one counselling as well as online counselling sessions.

Services I offer: complimentary half hour consultation on the telephone or in person to gives us a chance to see if we are a good fit for counselling together. You are under no obligation to continue. If my practice is full or I feel I may not best meet your needs, I can refer you to one of my colleagues. If we continue together I will provide consent and policy forms to be completed prior to our first session. In our first session I will ask questions and prompt you to share reflections to generate insight and the direction for us to continue on. I will provide suggestion to how we may further proceed and together we shall assess, if any, of the other MODALITIES I offer can be of service to you. You will be supported throughout to listen deeply to yourself and communicate your needs, desires and understanding. Additional Modalities. I have found that the therapeutic process can sometimes be enhanced by incorporating creative, exploratory experiences. You will have the opportunity to discover yourself anew through movement, posture, vocalization, writing, song writing, tactile creations, therapeutic gardening, yoga and/or theatrical representation. I will never ask you to do anything you’re not interested in trying as the work is intended to extend your understanding of your inner self. To help move through stagnation, confusion and frustration to more fulfilling states of being. But it will start with and return to your own innate interest and willingness. You will be continuously reminded to notice and listen to your own truth as the primary navigational tool. Our bodies are often a short cut to understanding patterns that are no longer useful, and provide insight into new ways of being and expressing what is most needing to be heard. There is a vast intelligence and esoteric understanding available when we are willing to brave the discomfort of exploring our uncharted, inner terrain. It is my intention to create a space where you feel safe and supported to be seen and heard.

Ray Freed ~ Green Door Counselling Vancouver, BCPrior to going into private practice in 2012, I was employed (22 years) as a chemical addictions counselor with West Coast Alternatives in North Vancouver. In that capacity my colleagues and I also worked with other addictions (gambling, sex, food, technological) and the deep personal and relationship issues which lie beneath all addictive behaviours.Through work experience and formal education I developed an understanding of social and emotional dynamics, problem formation and strategies for change. My teachers were many and varied, but the most important of these arrived unsolicited, early on in my life. I grew up on a farm in the prairie heartland. A child of second generation Swedish immigrants I quickly learned, the importance of independence and hard work, but, more importantly, I learned the value of co-operative relations with other human beings. The family name ‘Freed’ means ‘ peace’ in Swedish. None violent words and actions woven into the fabric of community life produced a pattern of mutual care and social responsibility. These values continued to inform the choices of myself and my siblings long after we had left the farm. Beneath social and moral codes was the land itself and the opportunity to learn, through our relationship with primal nature, the art of ‘ stillness ‘ and simply being ‘ present ‘ in life. The ‘ art ‘ of stillness, of ‘ listening ‘ respectfully and being present with others is the foundation upon which I have built my counselling practice. These are the values which are woven into the strategies I employ to help people face their fears and find the courage and skill to start creating the lives they want. The counsellor-client relationship is the primary tool in counselling work. Within that framework I promotes the healing process through the use of techniques and approaches such as the following: Cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, focusing, somatic experience, gestalt, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), buteyko breath work, stress management, journal and creative writing, mindfulness and meditation.I have a Master of Social Work degree from the University of British Columbia and is registered with the British Columbia College of Social Workers. I have over thirty years experience in counselling in the areas of social work, mental health and addictions. Counselling is often covered by your health care plan – Ray Reed: MSW, RSW #10381There is no going back when we are stuck with ‘concerns and worries’.The solution is going through it; opening the door and crossing the threshold into adeeper, richer relationship with ourselves and the world around us.And Green Door Counselling is here to help you. (Sliding scale available for those in need)
